The NFCA Annual Meeting is THE event where representatives from every segment of the fraternal industry can become more informed, enlightened, entertained and inspired.  Here are just a few features of this year's meeting:

Inform - Our lineup of workshops addresses virtually every aspect of fraternal benefit society management and operations.  The preliminary list of workshop topics includes sessions on shared service relationships between NFCA members; conducting community service activities that resonate with members and public policymakers; learning the secrets of being your own best political advocate; making your society's brand relevant to the next generation of members; conducting an effective communications audit; and preparing your society for a merger or acquisition.

Enlighten - You'll have a chance to talk finances and get a glimpse at what's ahead for the global economy with Stuart Varney, the well-respected anchor for Fox Business News.  Varney's insights into the factors affecting the prospects for an economic recovery and how expanded government intervention will impact the business community are vital to any executive responsible for charting his or her organization's course through the current financial minefield.

Entertain - How about an opening reception featuring the wine and food of our Portuguese-based member societies for starters?  (Did you know that San Antonio is the patron saint of Portugal?)  We've also got a river cruise to the Alamo and a dinner inside the walls of this historic symbol of Texas independence on the agenda.  Add several Saturday p.m. outings to nearby points of interest and the closing banquet featuring "only in Texas" food and dancing and you've got an event that you won't soon forget.

Inspire - We're going to inspire others and let people know who we are and what we do by kicking off the meeting with a community service event.  We're hoping to get every registered attendee to join forces and spend Thursday afternoon volunteering at a local charitable organization.  Our final session will feature the wit and wisdom of author and playwright John Powers.  His presentation is guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and leave you motivated to expand your fraternal mission.

Community Service Activity

Thursday, September 17

1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Attendees will be bused to the Family Service Association of San Antonio, which is housed in an old Studebaker dealership. We will be painting as many interior walls as possible of the three-story building. So bring your favorite painting outfit—JOIN HANDS DAY t-shirts are very welcome! If there are more volunteers than wall space, some landscaping projects are available.

Family Service Association of San Antonio, Inc., the area’s oldest non-profit organization, opened its doors in March 1903. Began as The Charity Association of San Antonio and Bexar County, it was founded by a group of public-minded community leaders whose goal was to provide financial assistance to poor and needy families and prevent their exploitation by unscrupulous individuals. During the following 103 years of uninterrupted service, Family Service Association's objectives and methodologies have changed, but its commitment to its mission of strengthening families has remained constant.

In 1940, Family Service was a founder of a new federated fund-raising group for private charities, the United Fund. It also helped to found the local chapter of the American Red Cross and initiated the City’s Homemaker Department. By the 1950s, Family Service was providing high-quality, professional counseling services. By the1970s, home-based services and group education for families were established. In the early 1990s, the agency began providing needed services through the creative use of volunteers, created the first teen-led gang alternative and implemented the largest Families and Schools Together program in the United States.
