The NFCA Proudly Recognizes "Fraternalists-in-Action"

Fraternal MVP—Week of December 1, 2008

The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize the following individual as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of December 1, 2008. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time, energy and compassion to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors.

Clifford Friesenhahn
Catholic Life Insurance

Selma-Converse Branch #14

San Antonio, Texas

Clifford Friesenhahn has devoted his life to serving the church and the community. The Selma-Converse Branch member of Catholic Life Insurance began as an altar boy when he was seven years old. Since then, he has been a Parish Council President, Parish Festival Chairman, religious education coordinator and teacher and Men’s Club President for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Nearly 30 years ago, Clifford was one of the first in the Archdiocese of San Antonio to be ordained a deacon.

As deacon, Clifford plays an essential role in one of San Antonio’s fastest growing parishes. He assists at daily and weekend masses. He has taught the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) for five years, is currently in charge of the baptism program, and often assists with weddings and funerals. Born into a large German-Catholic family, Clifford frequently converses in German with those he visits at local nursing homes.

A former Vice Chairman of the Catholic Life Board of Directors, Clifford also served as President of the Selma-Converse Branch and is now the Branch Spiritual Advisor.

In 1973, his wife Marlene, also an active volunteer, received the Archbishop Francis J. Furey Medal in recognition of exceptional service to the Catholic Church and the community. Clifford was honored two years later.

The couple has been married for 52 years and has five children, 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Clifford sums it by saying, “We have had a busy life; God has been very good to us.”

The NFCA salutes Fraternalists-in-Action for their dedication, kindness and generosity. They embody the heart of fraternalism through their volunteer efforts and commitment to their communities.
