The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize the following individual as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of June 29, 2009. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time, energy and compassion to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors.

Barbara Edmunds

CSA Fraternal Life

Prokop Velky #137

Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Barbara Edmunds has been a member of Lodge Prokop Velky #137 for eight years. Through the lodge, she has volunteered with the local “Especially for You Cancer Walk” and JOIN HANDS DAY, during which they cleaned up the Czech National Cemetery. Barbara also helps maintain the lodge’s garden at the cemetery, and places flags on the graves four times a year.

When the national CSA 71st Get Together was held in Cedar Rapids, Barb acted as the lodge’s correspondent, helped in the hospitality room and assisted with the drawings and prizes.

Barb also is very active in her community. Each summer she is the director of the five-week Czech language school for children, aged six to 16. She also assists with programs at the National Czech and Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids and has hosted Czech student visitors in her home as part of a home stay program.

She also volunteers for the Czech Heritage Foundation, Inc. of Cedar Rapids. She has chaired their St. Joseph fundraising dance, hiring the hall and band, handling the advertising and overseeing the adult and youth volunteers. Barb sits on the foundation’s scholarship committee. She also serves as the editor of Noviny Sokol Cedar Rapids that is published six times a year. She organizes the twice-yearly Pork and Dumpling Dinner and the kolache bakes. For the Federation of Czech Groups, she helps with the monthly meetings and bake sales to raise money to send English books to the Czech Republic.

Barb is a 50-year member of St. James Methodist Church where she has served on the Altar Guild, Deborah Circle, helps with funeral lunches and ushers.

The NFCA salutes Fraternalists-in-Action for their dedication, kindness and generosity. They embody the heart of fraternalism through their volunteer efforts and commitment to their communities.
