The NFCA Proudly Recognizes "Fraternalists-in-Action"
Fraternal MVP—Week of May 4, 2009
The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize the following individual as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of May 4, 2009. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time, energy and compassion to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors.
Michael Crow Greater Beneficial Union (GBU) District #815 Dayton, Ohio
A member of District #815 in Dayton, Ohio, Michael Crow, age 18, is another fine example of a GBU – Youth in Action. Michael and his parents, Douglas and Kathleen Crow, are all supporters of their local GBU district as well. The family regularly gives their time to help wherever they can with sponsored events such as the German Festival, Annual St. Nicholas Party and district meetings.
Michael has earned the highest rank in the Boy Scouts, the prestigious Eagle Scout. He has earned 42 merit badges toward his goal of 61 merit badges. Michael’s Eagle Project consisted of designing and constructing a double brick gas barbecue for his church.
Michael’s leadership skills include serving as Cub Scout Den Chief, Boy Scout Troop Guide and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. He also provides instruction on the proper procedures for retiring the U.S. Flag. He was honored with the Den Chief Service Award for his efforts in leadership and planning activities for the Cub Scouts. In February 2006, Michael attended the Price of Freedom Citizenship and Leadership Training Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is truly honored to attend since only 100 boys from across the nation are invited. Most recently, Michael was selected as the Boy Scout National Jamboree 2010 Adult Leader. This position of great responsibility will have him supervising Scouts on a trip to the Washington, D.C. area in 2010.
Michael is a sophomore at Wright State University where he is majoring in early childhood education. Prior to college, Michael participated in the Early Childhood Education Block Program, where he worked in classrooms as an Early Childhood Education High School Assistant for grades Pre-k to 3rd grade. His experiences in the classrooms reinforced his choice of major. Michael’s most rewarding experience in this program was working with a four-year-old child who was severely autistic. Michael succeeded in teaching the child how to ride a specialized tricycle, identify his colors and increase his communication skills.
In addition to having been awarded numerous scouting awards, Michael also was awarded with the Dennis Goeckel Scholarship (a scholarship for students majoring in elementary education), President’s Volunteer Silver Service Award, and the Career Portfolio Winner for the Education Block Program.
The NFCA salutes Fraternalists-in-Action for their dedication, kindness and generosity. They embody the heart of fraternalism through their volunteer efforts and commitment to their communities.
