The NFCA Proudly Recognizes "Fraternalists-in-Action"
Fraternal MVP—Week of November 24, 2008
The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize the following individual as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of November 24, 2008. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time, energy and compassion to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors.
Alyssa Adams Greater Beneficial Union of Pittsburgh (GBU)
District #45
Altoona, Pennsylvania
Alyssa Adams’ level of volunteer activity is amazing when you consider her age and the demands of being a full-time high-school student. Alyssa is 17 years old and a member of GBU District #45–Altoona, Pennsylvania. Alyssa regularly helps District #45 with its popular annual picnic and other district-sponsored events.
In 2007, she was awarded the Catholic Charities Service Award for providing over 150 hours of service as an active member of Saint Mary’s Youth Group. Alyssa is a member of Mount Carmel Parish where she sings at its chapel and helps with its annual festival.
Alyssa began babysitting a handicapped child when she was fourteen and has been taking care of him for more than two years. He is now six and requires specialized care. His parents often prefer her care to that provided by some of the agency-sent people.
The Locks of Love Foundation is a three-time recipient of Alyssa’s generosity. Alyssa lets her hair grow, only to have it cut off to give to someone who is medically ill and has lost his or her hair.
Alyssa makes weekly visits to the Hillview Nursing Home where she offers her services. She doesn’t do this because she has to, but out of the love she shares with all she helps. Her volunteer work at Hillview has made her a well-liked regular visitor at the dementia/behavioral unit at Garvey Manor, where she goes to see her 89-year-old great-great aunt.
Alyssa’s work at the church camp was voluntary, but now is considered as “in-training” to be a regular counselor for young girls, when she is old enough.
Alyssa is a senior at Bishop Guilfoyle High School. She developed an interest in the dental field after getting braces. Last year, she shadowed both an orthodontist and a dental hygienist, and she is currently researching colleges.
The NFCA salutes Fraternalists-in-Action for their dedication, kindness and generosity. They embody the heart of fraternalism through their volunteer efforts and commitment to their communities.
